Break; November Devlog Challenge

I took a break from this project for two reasons. The first is because I'm horribly flighty and tend to flutter from project to project without any excuse. The second is because I was looking for a new job and wanted to work on a project in react/browser to give me a more contemporary portfolio piece. I'm still working on that project in the background, however. I've finally decided to come back to work on this project, and have been poking around in Unity for the last couple days.

The Sprites cast shadows now, which I'm very excited about. It gives moving around a very interesting feeling. It feels more grounded even than I was expecting.

For the month of November, in joining with an initiative of the members of a gamedev discord I'm apart of, I decided I'd make a dev log each day for a month. I have always been horrible at tracking my progress, and when I let a project slip away the work I did goes completely unnoticed, sometimes even by myself. I'm hoping that making a dev log every day will help me not only do directed, meaningful work more consistently, but help me feel more comfortable talking about my projects.

Today I made buildings. This is the part where I actually talk about today's work. In poking around with Unity and it's tools I stumbled across a package called Probuilder, which is very neat. It's probably not exactly an exciting discovery for anyone more versed in Unity than myself but for me it was important. Today I spent the evening listening to Brandon Sanderson's Oathbringer on Audible, and putting together some simple shapes for the buildings in the root town I'm building. A process shot was used for the cover image of this devlog post.

Next Steps. I'm planning to focus on more buildings I think. I'm working mainly on prefabs right now. I want to have pieces I can easily use and re-use to build a large city. As I work on the textures for these buildings their inspiration will become clearer. I hope to talk more about them in the future as I work.

Thanks for reading
