Gobblezilla is just a little guy, but you can change that if you guide him to powerplants so that he can suck up all that good, clean(ish) energy! Then he can break even MORE stuff. Be sure to assault helicopters so they stop shooting at you.

Project Background and Limitations

Gobblezilla is the first in a series of very small-scale games I'm creating to learn the Godot engine workflow. Gobblezilla has a clear and obvious inspiration. The impetus for this game was actually my long-time friend's excitement over the upcoming Godzilla: Minus One movie (go watch it when it comes out it looks like a blast). This game takes no direct input from Godzilla other than stomping around a city breaking stuff. You know, just kaiju things.

For this project, to avoid scope creep (my nemesis!) I endeavored to create a game where all the assets would fit on a 96x96 pixel grid with 16x16 pixel sprites. I also time-boxed myself to the day my friend watched the movie for official release. There are a few small issues I would have liked to sort out but I didn't want to be working on this thing for forever.

I will include a downloadable for the sprite sheet. You may use it in non-commercial work as long as you credit me and link back to this project in your itch/steam page :)

Upkeep and Future Projects

While the project says "version 1", I don't have any immediate plans to extend this game. I would love feedback, of course. this is my first packaged and shipped game that wasn't created in RPGmaker and I'm sure I have a lot to learn about a lot of topics. If the game has gets enough feedback and interest I may choose to extend/improve it at a later date, but for now I'm considering it a learning experience and moving on. I will fix glaring issues with the game within a few weeks of posting it as my schedule allows.

I really enjoyed the 96x96 challenge, and while I don't think I'll be using just a single sprite sheet in future games (it created some headaches and graphical issues in this project) I plan to make a few more of these small-scale projects in Godot using the same asset restrictions. Limitations breed creativity.

Known Issues:

  • being 3x size doesn't break biggest buildings (yes it's supposed to!)
  • Arrow characters in the menu font don't work on web, just show up as weird characters
  • Camera is weird when you're x3+

Very nice, an enjoyable game, and very solid little game - a couple of inconsistencies and bugs in the version I'm playing...

  • The camera movement
  • The mixels (pixel scaling) breaking the pixel grid
  • The shooting coming out of the feet
  • The difficulty being a tad too easy for it to be challenging
